Culturally Competent Mental Health Services for Diverse Communities
April 29th, 2021
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm ET
Seeking mental health services as an individual with lived experience of mental illness or a caregiver can be difficult. The shared beliefs, values and experiences of any social or racial group can result in different worldviews and have a significant impact on how someone perceives and understands symptoms. A person must feel comfortable and understood by their mental health professional for a therapeutic relationship to be effective. This includes feeling their mental health professional understands their identity and being comfortable addressing it openly. This is why mental health care must be tailored to the individual — to their identity, culture and experience.
Join the conversation with our four panelists as they share their perspectives and inform us about ways to advocate for culturally competent care. We will be learning from a caregiver and an individual with lived experience of mental illness about how they advocate for better services and providers will speak about the importance of providing equitable and respectful quality care and services that are inclusive of the cultural health beliefs and practices of the community they serve.
