Remembering a Beloved Advocate
Virginia Saull, a long time president of NAMI Salem, passed away in 2016. Volunteer leaders of NAMI Salem would like to honor Virginia for her admirable leadership and example in serving. After a family member was diagnosed with mental illness, Virginia wanted to learn all she could, and she and her husband joined NAMI. She became a strong advocate for persons and families with mental illness and eventually became the President of NAMI Salem County. Virginia was NAMI Salem’s first Family Support Group facilitator and Family-to-Family teacher. She’s been an amazing support for many volunteer leaders of the affiliate on their personal journeys. Over the years she received many awards, including the Inter Agency Council Community Education Award in 2003 and the 2014 NAMI NJ Lifetime Affiliate Leadership Award. She was also known for her outstanding penmanship, stenciling, her homemade candles and her legendary fried chicken. Virginia was a member of St. Joseph’s RC Church and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. The NAMI Family is blessed to have had an affiliate leader like Virginia.
